Men's Tennis Tops Niagara, 5-2

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield men’s tennis team topped Niagara University this afternoon to become one of just two teams that are still undefeated in conference play.  The Stags (10-6, 4-0 MAAC) edged the Purple Eagles, 5-2, as sophomore Cameron Amyot clinched the match for the squad.

In regular fashion, Fairfield captured the doubles point to start the day with wins in the two and three spots.  Duo Erik Kremheller and George Tioutine put down Mathieu Lacasse and Michael Elortegui, 8-1, but were followed by a Niagara victory to force the pairs at No. 2 doubles to decide the first point of the day.  Cameron Amyot and Ian Tesmond battled with Brandon Gallegos and Lorenz Shwojer but came out with the win, 9-7.

Ofir Solomon carried the momentum into singles capturing another point for the Stags.  The freshman beat Gallegos in two straight sets, as did the two of the other three Stags to capture wins in singles play.  At No. 1, Tesmond stopped Elortegui, 6-3, 6-2, never giving up control of the match.  Cameron Amyot secured the fourth point for Fairfield, and therefore the match, with his win in the six spot over Lacasse.  Sophomore George Tioutine was the final member of the squad with a win in singles, making the score 5-2 with his three-set victory over David Raymond, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3.

The Stags return to play against Marist College (9-3, 1-0 MAAC) on Tuesday, April 16, at 3PM on their home court.  Fairfield last faced the Red Foxes in the 2012 MAAC Championship coming away with the historic 4-3 win to send the team to their first ever NCAA Tournament appearance.
