Fairfield University Athletics Captures 2011-12 MA

                FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University earned the 2011-12 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Academy Bus Commissioner’s Cup which is awarded annually as a symbol of overall excellence in the 24 championships conducted within the conference. The Stags won the overall Commissioner’s Cup and the men’s Commissioner’s Cup this year. Fairfield athletics won the overall Commissioner’s Cup for the fourth time (1994-95, 1997-98, and 2008-09).

                “The Commissioner’s Cup is a benchmark for excellence,” Fairfield University Director of Athletics Gene Doris said. “It is only through the support of our administration as well as the efforts and dedication of our student-athletes and coaching staffs that we are in position to receive this tremendous honor.”

                Fairfield University won three MAAC championships this season – men’s soccer, men’s tennis, and women’s tennis – while all teams advanced to their respective conference championship tournament.  As a program, Fairfield University owned a .609 winning percentage with 13 teams posting winning overall records.

                “Congratulations to the Fairfield University athletic department on its success this year and winning the Academy Bus Commissioner’s Cup that symbolizes excellence across the breadth of MAAC sports championships,” Rich Ensor, Commissioner of the MAAC said. “As a founding member of the MAAC, Fairfield’s administrators and coaches understand the effort required by their programs to achieve this level of winning across sports and congratulate their student-athletes for this honor.”

                In the overall race, Fairfield scored 135.50 points to win the Cup, while Marist finished second with 126 points. On the men’s side, Fairfield secured the Cup with 62.50 points, nine more than runner-up Iona. Fairfield finished second in the women’s Cup with 73 points, just two points off Marist’s top point total.
