West Windsor, N.J. – Fairfield women’s tennis became the 2012 MAAC Women’s Champions today after defeating Marist College, 4-1. After dropping the lone doubles point, the Stags swept the Red Foxes in singles play.
Sharissa Ryan was named the Most Outstanding Performer of the MAAC Championship.
The first doubles match to finish was in the two spot, with Ryan and Allison Radde breezing by Tahir and O’Donovan with an 8-0 finish. However, Fairfield couldn’t pull out another doubles win dropping to Marist duos Ryanor and McCarthy in the one spot and Sun and Campbell at No. 3 doubles.
Down 1-0 entering singles play, the Stags came out and finished strong taking four matches in straight sets and leaving the other two unfinished. In the one spot, MAAC Women’s Player of the Year Monica Yajima defeated Kelsey Raynor 6-1, 6-2 while Sharissa Ryan defeated Erin McCarthy 7-5, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. The other two victories for the Stags came in the five and six spots with Victoria Pirrello and Nikki Jackson. Pirrello defeated Sabrina Tahir 6-3, 6-1 and Nikki Jackson defeated Kayla O’Donovan, 6-3, 6-4.
This is the women’s third MAAC Championship title in the last four years, having won back-to-back in 2009 and 2010. It’s also Fairfield’s 10th MAAC Championship overall. The Stags have now secured their fourth NCAA Tournament berth, having gone to USC in 2009 and Stanford in 2010.
The first and second rounds for the 2012 NCAA Women’s Championships are scheduled for May 11-12 and the Selection Show will be held on Tuesday, May 1, at 5pm. More information will be posted as it becomes available.
