Sophomore Monica Yajima earned the Women’s MAAC Player of the Week award for her 4-0 record this past week against opponents Sacred Heart University and Niagara University.
Against the Pioneers, Yajima played both No. 1 singles and doubles. The Stag came back to b eat Gabi Kaldan after dropping the first set in a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 decision. In doubles, Yajima paired with classmate Sharissa Ryan. The two defeated Sacred Heart’s Kate Donnelly and Kristina Chao 8-4.
Against the Purple Eagles, Yajima once against competed in her usual one spot. She defeated Hilary Hansen in two straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, and with Ryan defeated Hansen and Iva Celan, 8-3.
This season, the Stag is a perfect 10-0 in the No. 1 singles spot and has also dominated with Ryan in doubles with a record of 7-3.
The Fairfield women’s team improved to 7-4 on the season and 3-0 in the MAAC. The team will play on the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts this Saturday for their rescheduled match against UMass at noon. MAAC play resumes for the women next week as they travel to last year’s champion, Marist College on Wednesday, April 4 for a match at 3pm.
