NORTH TONAWANDA, N.Y. – The Fairfield University women’s tennis team defeated Niagara 6-1 in their MAAC spring opener.
The Stags started off the day earning the lone doubles point with victories by duo Monica Yajima and Sharissa Ryan, and Victoria Pirrello and Emma Samson. In the No. 1 spot, Yajima and Ryan defeated Hilary Hansen and Iva Celan 8-3. Pirrello and Samson in the No. 3 spot gave up just one game against Rachel Zilka and Jenna McCune.
In singles, Pirrello swept her opponent at No. 5 singles while Yajime took the No. 1 spot 6-0, 6-3. Other victories on the day came from Ryan in a three set battle, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 and Carolina Koladzyn who also went three sets with her MAAC opponent but ook the match 7-5, 4-6, 10-3.
The Stags will open at the Walsh Athletic Tennis Courts on March 28 at 2pm against the University of Massachusetts.
