FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The four teams selected for the 2012 NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey East Regional hosted by Fairfield University and Yale University at Webster Bank Arena were announced this afternoon. Union College, Michigan State University, Miami (Ohio) University, and UMass-Lowell will be playing March 23-24 for a chance to advance to the Frozen Four.
The first round begins on Friday, March 23 as No. 1 Union faces No. 4 Michigan State at 3pm. That game will be followed by the No. 2 Miami (Ohio) versus No. 3 UMass-Lowell contest at 6:30pm. The East Regional final will be held on Saturday, March 24 at 6:30pm. All three games will air live on ESPNU/ESPN3.
Union, which came to Bridgeport last season for the East Regional, is the overall third seed after winning the program’s first ECAC Hockey Championship. The Dutchmen are 24-7-7 overall this season.
Michigan State earned an at-large berth after going 19-15-4 this season. The Spartans, who are making their first NCAA appearance since 2007-08, fell to Miami (Ohio) in the quarterfinals of the 2012 CCHA Tournament.
Miami (Ohio) is making its seventh consecutive NCAA appearance. The RedHawks went 24-14-2 overall this season and claimed third place in the 2012 CCHA Tournament.
UMass-Lowell is making its first NCAA appearance since 1996. The River Hawks posted a 23-12-1 record this season and advanced to the Hockey East quarterfinals.
