BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams ended competition at the 2012 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships by shattering records at the Burt Flickinger Center. In addition, freshman
Ashlee Steinberger was named the MAAC Women’s Most Outstanding Diver.
Steinberger, who won the 3-meter event on Thursday, placed fourth on the 1-meter this evening with a score of 203.60. Steinberger is just the second Stag to be named MAAC Diver of the Meet as Catherine Bassi earned the honor in 1993.
Senior
Michelle Yoshida took the silver medal in the women’s 200y backstroke with a record-setting time of 2:02.90 in her final individual event as a Stag. Yoshida took silver in the 50y freestyle on Thursday and captured the 100y backstroke last night. She will graduate with nine individual MAAC titles, three silver medals, and one bronze relay medal. Yoshida holds 11 individual program records and is a part of 10 relay records.
Senior
Brian Friedlander saved his best swim for last in the men’s 200y breaststroke. In his final event as a Stag, Friedlander broke a program record and finished sixth overall in the event with a time of 2:06.04. The previous standard was 2:06.72 which was set by Drew Kingman in 2008. Friedlander will leave Fairfield with three individual program records and as a part of four relay records.
Freshman
Tyler Conley placed sixth overall in the men’s 100y freestyle after clocking a time of 46.99 seconds. In the prelims on Saturday morning, Conley set a program record with a time of 46.89 seconds.
Sophomore
Suzy Lawlor placed sixth overall in the women’s 200y breaststroke with a time of 2:26.34.
Junior
Paul Bimmler won the B final of the men’s 200y back to place ninth overall and shattered a six-year-old program record in the process. Bimmler clocked a time of 1:55.05 to break Rob Willhoit’s record of 1:56.06 which was set in 2005.
In the women’s 1650y freestyle, sophomore
Margaret Osmulski placed seventh overall and broke a five-year-old program record with a time of 17:36.23. Osmulski broke Brittany Hunter’s record of 17:37.30 which was set in 2006. Rookie
Meredith LaBerge also had a strong swim posting a personal best of 17:36.68 to place ninth overall. Freshman
Alyssa Acompora had a personal best of 18:31.55 in the event.
In the B Final of the 100y free, senior
Brendan Sarpu was the first swimmer to touch and placed ninth overall after posting a personal best of 47.33 seconds. Freshman
Doug Leclair clocked a personal best of 47.70 seconds to place 13th overall.
In the men’s 200y butterfly,
Stefan Toi broke his own program record by nearly two seconds after clocking a time of 1:56.55 to finish 12th overall. Senior
Andrew Robinson placed 14th overall with a personal best of 1:57.94. Freshman
Brett Borgognone finished 16th with a time of 2:00.73.
In the women’s 200y butterfly, junior
Cacky Keating placed 12th overall with a time of 2:10.35. Senior
Aly Criscuolo placed 14th overall with a time of 2:12.49.
The men’s 400y freestyle relay of Conley, Sarpu, Leclair, and Bimmler set a new program standard with a time of 3:08.32 to place sixth overall. It was the fourth relay record of the meet for both Bimmler and Conley and the third for Leclair.
Freshman
Lauren Kemple placed 12th overall in the women’s 1-meter diving with a score of 173.00.
The women’s 400y freestyle relay of Yoshida, Keating, Osmulski, and
Emily Pedrick had a time of 3:35.89 to finish sixth overall.
In the men’s 1650y freestyle,
Kevin Greener had a personal best of 16:44.05.
The Fairfield men placed sixth overall, up two spots from last season, with 300 points. The Stags were just five points behind Iona College which finished fifth. Rider University captured the event with 717 points while Canisius College was the runner-up with 587.50 points.
The Fairfield women placed sixth overall with 326 points. The Stags were just 5.5 points behind Canisius which finished fifth. Marist College captured the event with 813.50 points while Rider was the runner-up with 657.50 points.

Saturday’s Prelims
In the prelims of the women’s 200y back, Bridget McGowan had a personal best of 2:13.42 while senior Norah Gentile had a personal best of 2:14.61. Lisa Tkach also had a personal best with a time of 2:16.21. Senior Caroline Menapace finished in 2:22.96.
In the men’s 200y back, Kenny Muti had a personal best of 2:01.98 while Chris Weaver had a personal best of 2:05.44. Kyle Rozanitis had a time of 2:09.37
In the women’s 100y freestyle, Teresa Garrity had a time of 55.96 seconds while Emily Pedrick clocked a time of 55.97 seconds. Meghan Weiser had a personal best with a time of 55.99 seconds.
In the men’s 100y free, Tommy Peters just missed the cut after stopping the clock with a personal best of 49.10 seconds.
In the women’s 200y breaststroke, Emily Kelly had a personal best of 2:34.85. In the men’s 200y breast, Rich Straub and Kevin Kett each had personal bests, recording times of 2:13.74 and 2:18.74, respectively.
In the women’s 200y butterfly, Samantha Distler had a personal best of 2:19.88 while Megan Kuzniewski had a personal best with a time of 2:21.04. Brianna Riley finished in 2:27.98.
In the men’s 200y fly, senior Anthony Caserta had a personal best of 2:06.99.
