FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams opened the second half of their season with a tough loss to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Rider University this afternoon at the RecPlex. The men’s team fell 194.5-91.5 while the women’s team fell 178-110.
Senior
Michelle Yoshida won three individual events for the Stags. Yoshida captured the 100m backstroke with a time of 1:05.38, defeating Rider’s Addison Oswald who touched in 1:06.27. Yoshida posted a win in the 50m freestyle, clocking a time of 27.57 second, touching out Rider’s Taylor Byerly who had a time of 27.96 seconds. Yoshida finished the day by winning the 100m freestyle with a time of 1:00.75, defeating Rider’s Carlee Oswald by nearly a second.
Yoshida also swam the lead leg of the second-place 200m medley relay which consisted of
Suzy Lawlor, Cacky Keating, and
Teresa Garrity. The Stags quartet posted a time of 2:04.82 just off the pace of Rider who finished in 2:04.78.
Lawlor captured the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:17.17 and placed second in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:48.29. Keating placed second in the 100m butterfly with a time of 1:08.43 and third in the 200m fly with a time of 2:28.91.
Sophomore
Margaret Osmulski posted a personal best in the 800m freestyle, finishing as the runner-up in a time of 9:24.52. Osmulski placed second in the 200m individual medley, recording a time of 2:30.08. She also posted a personal best in the 400m freestyle, clocking a time of 4:39.80 to finish third.
On the men’s side, the 200m freestyle relay of junior
Paul Bimmler, freshman
Doug Leclair, senior
Brendan Sarpu, and freshman
Tyler Conley set a program record with a time of 1:37.49 which earned them first place points. The previous standard was 1:38.20 which was set in November 2009.
Bimmler teamed with
Brian Friedlander,
Andrew Robinson, and Conley to place second in the 200m medley relay with a time of 1:52.15, just one second off the program record.
Conley captured the 50m freestyle with a time of 24.27 seconds and was fourth in the 100m freestyle with a time of 55.09 seconds. Friedlander was the runner-up in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 2:29.38 and finished third in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:11.16. Bimmler placed third in the 100m back with a time of 1:02.57, just shy of his personal best.
Sophomore
Cody Parker was the runner-up in the 200m butterfly with a time of 2:01.20 and finished third in the 400m free with a time of 4:20.61.
On the boards,
Lauren Kemple recorded a pair of personal bests, posting a score of 203.55 on the 1-meter to earn first place points and a mark of 198.38 on the 3-meter to earn second place points.
Ashlee Steinberger earned first place points on the 3-meter with a score of 220.73 and second place points on the 1-meter with a score of 194.63.
Junior
Ryan Krebs finished third on both boards, registering a personal best of 217.70 on the 1-meter and a mark of 227.47 on the 3-meter. Freshman
Will Sullivan had a pair of personal bests, recording a mark of 202.72 on the 1-meter and a score of 207.67 on the 3-meter.
The men’s team falls to 3-4 on the season while the women’s team falls to 4-5 with the loss this afternoon.
Fairfield returns to action next weekend when it hosts MAAC foe Iona College at 1pm in the RecPlex. After the meet, there will be a Friends of Fairfield Swimming & Diving reception at the Levee.
