Malcolm Gilbert developed into one of the conference’s top defensive players, placing seventh with 1.3 rejections every forty minutes. Gilbert finished the year with 35 blocks in 28 games, starting his Fairfield career with eight blocks against Sacred Heart in the season opener. He just missed a double-double in that game after adding 11 rebounds against the Pioneers. He blocked a shot I 16 of his 28 appearances and had three or more in five outings. Gilbert finished his season with 2.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game. The Pitt transfer did not reach double figures during the season, coming closest with his eight points at Loyola Md. on November 16. He also played a personal-best 30 minutes against the Greyhounds. Gilbert posted a .485 field goal percentage by making 32 of his 66 field goal attempts. He started five times in 2013-14, all coming in succession – Northeastern, Green Bay, Bucknell, Marist, and Manhattan.

Before Fairfield
Gilbert was a redshirt sophomore for the University of Pittsburgh and did not play in any games during the 2012-13 season. As a freshman, the center appeared in 19 games for the Panthers and played 93 minutes as a reserve. His first appearance occurred in the Long Beach State game. He enjoyed his best overall game against St. Francis, Pa. with two points, three rebounds, and 16 minutes. He was a Big East Academic All-Star in 2011-12. Before attending Pittsburgh, Gilbert is a 2011 graduate of Academy of the New Church where he helped the team to a 21-6 overall record and the number eight position in the state rankings. He averaged 6.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.0 blocks per game in his final year at the Academy of the New Church. He was an All-Friends League honorable mention and became a 2011 McDonald’s All-America nominee as a senior.
