FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team picked up its second home win of the season this afternoon, defeating LIU by a 7-0 score at University Field.
Kylie Corcoran paced the Stags' offense with three goals and an assist, one of four Fairfield goal scorers in the match.
"The effort was certainly there today which helped us connect for several spectacular goals," Head Coach
Laura Gebhart said. "Kylie has been phenomenal. Her effort off the ball and her energy on the ball has helped us generate attack opportunities. She has been a solid force on our set pieces as well."
Corcoran provided the Stags' first goal of the afternoon, coming off one of the team's 19 penalty corners on the day.
Alice Pifferi started the play with the insertion, sending the ball to
Catalina Ness who set up the shot for Corcoran.
Fairfield broke the game open in the second quarter with four goals, the first coming off the stick of
Konni Hofmann just 33 seconds into the period. The Stags followed that early score with a three-goal spurt over four minutes that changed a two-goal edge into a five-goal advantage.
Emily Carney was the next Fairfield goal scorer to benefit from a penalty corner, as it was Pifferi who started the scoring chance with a pass that landed with Corcoran She spotted the ball for Carney who sent a shot just inside the far post for a 3-0 lead. Just 20 second later, Rylee La Loup was on task for the Stags, posting an unassisted goal about five yards from the cage.
Corcoran ended the second quarter with her second goal as she converted the team's first penalty stroke opportunity of the new season. Corcoran's scoring momentum carried into the second half as well, finishing off her hat trick with a goal in the 52
nd minute to move the needle to 6-0.
La Loup added her name to the box score one more time, tacking on the team's seventh goal just 36 seconds later.
Fairfield outshot LIU by a 35-3 count with goalkeepers
Paige Jackson and
Georgia McDade combining for the clean sheet. Jackson played the first half while McDade finished the game by holding the line over the final two quarters.
The Fairfield University field hockey team will make its first road trip of the season on Friday, September 11 when the Stags make the short trip to Yale University for a 6 pm match. The team returns home on Sunday, September 13 for a non-conference game against Brown University at 1 pm, the start of another three-game home stand for the Stags.
