Men's Soccer Gains Clean Sheet At Saint Peter's

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team scored in each half against Saint Peter's University, taking the Stags to a 4-0 win in Metro Conference play. The Stags are 4-0-2 in their last six matches including two conference wins.

Both teams had ample opportunities to score but strong play from the goalkeepers kept the game even for most of the half. Saint Peter's collected the first chance when Samuel Rudjord controlled the ball in the box and sent a shot to the far corner that forced full extension from goalkeeper Evan Chomow.

The Stags had a similar chance later in the half courtesy of good work from Cristian Ortiz in the 13th minute. The sophomore was able to secure the ball just outside the box on the right side and dragged it to the center of the box. He took a shot directed toward the upper right before goalkeeper Sebastian Heredia-Randen pushed the ball over the crossbar.

Chomow was forced to make a pair of saves just seconds apart in the 25th minute, as Marcos de Elias and Harry Edwards caused a response from the keeper. The Stags put together their own flurry later in the half, first from Sean Albritton with an attempt that created a save for Heredia-Randen. Just 20 seconds later, Cristiano Carlos found open space on the left side and sent a cross to Ortiz who finished to the far corner which gave the lead to Fairfield.

Fairfield finished the half with a 6-5 shot advantage but all five Saint Peter's attempts needed to be saved by Chomow.

The Stags doubled their advantage just five minutes into the second half after Saint Peter's lost possession on its side of the pitch. Pipeloore Olanrewaju secured the ball, turned inside the box, and sent a shot past the keeper to bring Fairfield to a two-goal advantage.

Fairfield continued to put pressure on the Saint Peter's back line over the next 14 minutes by accounting for three of the game's next four shots. None of those four attempts required any attention from the goalkeepers, keeping the score at 2-0.

Sean Albritton broke through for the Stags' third goal of the match when he found himself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, pushing a shot to the lower right corner for a 3-0 advantage in the 66th minute.

Ortiz finished off the scoring in the match when he took another shot from outside the box that found its way to the back of the goal in the 77th minute, changing the score to 4-0.

The Fairfield University men's soccer team will continue Metro Conference play on Saturday night when the Stags host Manhattan University at Lessing Field. The match is set for a 6 pm start.
