HAMDEN, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team was edged in the series finale as the Quinnipiac Bobcats took a 5-4 decision by a walk-off hit by pitch in the ninth.
Matthew Bucciero was the offensive bright spot for the Stags with a game-tying home run in the seventh.
Bucciero also brought home the first Fairfield run with a RBI single to left in the first. The senior extends his team-high with 43 RBI which includes eight in his last four games. He also has two home runs during that span.
The Bobcats would answer with a three-run by James Marino in the fourth to take a 3-1 lead.
Fairfield took advantage of a throwing error in the sixth as two runs crossed the plate to even the score at 3-3. Both teams combined for seven errors in the contest.
The see-saw battle continued in the bottom half of the frame with the Bobcats regaining the lead with a sacrifice fly.
Bucciero would launch his 16th home run – which sets a new career-high – in the seventh to tie the game at 4-4.
The Bobcats would load the bases in the ninth and eventually walk-off as Marino was hit by a pitch.
The Stags got a runner on bases in every inning except for the ninth as they tallied five hits and three walks. Bucciero led the team with two hits.
With the series loss, the Stags sit third in the MAAC just one game behind Niagara.
Fairfield will play in their final conference home series next weekend when they welcome Marist. The Stags will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday and also honor Head Coach
Bill Currier in one of his last home games as the Stags' skipper before the Sunday afternoon game.
