BRONX, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team scored 12 unanswered runs which included three ninth inning homers leading to a 12-6 win over Fordham in midweek action. The Stags hit four total home runs with
Nolan Colby,
Dom Camera,
TJ Schmalzle, and
Jake Haarde all going deep for the squad.
"It took a while for the bats to come alive, but
JP Kuczik's clutch pinch hit put us up and ignited the five-run rally," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "The power explosion from four different players certainly pushed up the lead to a comfortable margin. Other than a four-run fourth our pitching did a nice job sharing the ball and limiting runs."
Fairfield fell behind 5-0 going into the fifth before erupting for 12 unanswered runs. Two of those runs came in the top of the fifth with Schmalzle scoring on a throwing error for Fairfield's first run. The reigning MAAC Player of the Week
Matthew Bucciero drove in another with a single up the middle.
Fairfield would plate five runs in both the eighth and ninth innings to take a commanding lead. Colby tied the game with a three-run shot to right, his fourth of the season.
JP Kuczik gave the Stags the lead with a RBI single to center. Schmalzle capped the five-spot with a RBI double to left center.
The Stags would plate five more runs in the ninth all scored off a home run. The rally would start with two outs with Camera providing the first long ball, a solo shot to left marking his first as a Stag. Schmalzle crushed a three-run shot for his seventh of the spring and Haarde immediately followed with a solo shot to left.
Will Youngman picked up the win with two shutout innings and combined with
Brendon Miller and
Alex Frank to give the Stags' bats time to come alive.
The win was Fairfield's fourth-straight and boosted their overall record to 19-15. Fairfield will open up another pivotal MAAC series against Iona at home this weekend.
