Stags Fall to Columbia in Midweek Action

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team fell to the Columbia Lions by a 13-6 final score in midweek action at Don and Chris Cook Field. Matthew Bucciero had the biggest hit for the Stags with a solo homer and also had an impact defensively by robbing a Columbia four-bagger. TJ Schmalzle led the offense with three hits.

Fairfield had their first and only lead of the game as they plated a pair of runs in the bottom of the first. Schmalzle had the first of his three base knocks as he lined a RBI double down the left field line to tie the game at 1-1. Liam McIlroy who appeared in his first game in two months, gave the Stags the advantage with a hard-hit RBI single to left.

Columbia would score at least a run in five of the next seven frames to take control of the game.

Fairfield had the tying run to the plate in three-straight innings but could not find the big hit.

Bucciero got the Stags closer with a solo shot to start off the bottom of the seventh, his 10th of the season and the 45th of his career.

Carter Grande brought home a pair in the same frame with a two-run RBI double.

Fairfield will continue their homestand when they welcome Mount St. Mary's to Don and Chris Cook Field with a three-game set starting on Friday at 3pm.
