WEST POINT, N.Y. – Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse was within two goals of #23 Army West Point late in the third quarter of Wednesday's road contest, but the host Black Knights scored the last five goals of the contest to pull away for a 15-8 win.
Kelly Haggerty posted a hat trick and an assist to total four points for the Stags.
The decision snaps a three-game winning streak for the Stags, who move to 4-2. Army improved to 4-2 with the victory.
With her third consecutive hat trick, Haggerty pushed her team-leading total to 15 goals this season. The MAAC Preseason Player of the Year also dished out her fourth assist on the season.
Two Stags got on the board for the first time in their respective careers.
Sara MacLeod scored her first two collegiate goals and distributed her third career assist.
Lizzie Getz also scored her first goal – also her first point – as a Stag.
Rounding out the Fairfield attack,
Kyleigh Tufano recorded a goal and an assist,
Haley Burns scored one goal, and
Tessa Caputo doled out two assists to run her total to a team-best 17 assists on the season.
On the opposite end of the field,
Whitney Robinson had a standout day with 11 saves against the high-powered Army West Point offense. The graduate student also picked up two ground balls.
Sophia Colasacco led the defensive unit in front of Robinson with three caused turnovers, while
Katherine Shammas picked up two ground balls. Burns had two caused turnovers in the midfield to go along with her goal.
The Black Knights' offense leaned its two All-America performers as attacker Allison Reilly scored three goals with four assists and seven draw controls, while midfielder Brigid Duffy had four goals, three assists, six draw controls, three caused turnovers, and three ground balls.
Lindsey Serafine made five saves protecting the Army West Point goal.
Another ranked opponent is on deck when the Stags return home to host #19 Denver on Sunday, March 8 at noon. The Pioneers are 5-0 entering a Friday visit to #10/13 Stony Brook.
