Stags Earn Midweek Win Over St. John’s

QUEENS, N.Y. – Luke Nomura hit a game-tying double in the top of the seventh and six Fairfield University Baseball pitchers threw scoreless outings leading to a 6-4 midweek victory over St. John's on Tuesday. The victory ends the Stags' season-opening 12-game road trip as the team is scheduled to return home this weekend.

"Using seven pitchers with mostly all having success for their inning(s) made it a good staff day," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "We were patient at the plate and took the walk instead of e expanding the zone today which led to some runs. Too many runners left on base were a concern but it was a good day to hold on to a win facing only seven batters over 8-9th innings."

The Stags struck first in the very first inning with Fairfield's first three hitters all reaching base on either a walk or hit by pitch. JP Kuczik and Connor Scanlan brought home two of those runners by putting the ball in play.

St. John's would score all four of their runs in the third, highlighted by an Adam Agresti two-run homer.

After that frame, five Fairfield pitchers would combine for six scoreless innings. Alex Frank had the longest outing out of the quintet with 1.2 scoreless innings. Will Youngman and Jimmy Mulvaney each threw 1.1 scoreless frames. Jack Sheldon threw a scoreless eighth while Ryan Maiorano earned the save with a hitless ninth.

Offensively, the Stags got a run back in the sixth on a Dom Camera sacrifice fly. Nomura tied the game in the next inning with a RBI double. Connor Scanlan gave the Stags the lead by drawing a bases loaded walk and Payten Wawruch added an insurance run with a sacrifice fly.

In total, the Stags drew 12 walks with Matthew Bucciero leading the team with four free passes.

Fairfield is scheduled to open up the home portion of their 2026 schedule and return to Don and Chris Cook Field for a three-game series against Manhattan starting on Friday afternoon.
