ELON, N.C. – The Fairfield University Baseball responded with a season-high six runs and 10 hits leading to a 6-4 victory over Elon for Fairfield's first win of the season. Six different Stags tallied a hit led by
TJ Schmalzle's three base knocks.
Ryan Maiorano picked up his first collegiate win with
Harrison Engle tallying his first career save.
The Stags scored four of those runs in the final two innings of the game with
Connor Scanlan giving the Stags a 3-2 lead with a RBI single in the eighth.
Schmalzle capped his game with a run-scoring single in the ninth with JP Kuzcik driving in two while capping the scoring with a single to right.
Engle would come in to relief and retire both batters he faced to complete the 6-4 win.
Schmalzle opened up the scoring with a RBI double in the first, scoring
Luke Nomura who opened the game with a double.
Carter Grande added his first homer as a Stag to tie the game at 2-2 in the fifth.
On the mound, Brandon Miller started the game and struck out six in his four innings of work.
Alex Frank and
Nick Kelly followed with a scoreless inning each. Maiorano pitched the seventh and eighth frames striking out a pair.
The Stags will head back to the Northeast to challenge Central Connecticut State on the road on Tuesday at 3pm.
