FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men's Basketball jumped out to a 17-6 lead over visiting Siena and never looked back on Friday night at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. Four players scored in double figures and the Stags led wire-to-wire in the 72-58 victory.
After tonight, the Stags have won three straight games and eight of their last 10 to improve to 19-11 overall and 11-8 in the MAAC. Siena slips to 19-11 on the season with a 12-7 conference tally.
Fairfield avenges an 85-77 loss to the Saints on Jan. 19 in Albany. The Stags are 7-1 when playing a MAAC opponent for the second time this season.
"All the things you do with the scouting report and all the things you do with offensive schemes and defensive schemes are important," said Head Coach
Chris Casey. "But the most important thing is how hard you play and how hard you play for the length of the game on both ends of the floor. We're doing that, and that's what's helping us be successful."
Tonight's game was
Chris Casey's 55th win in his 99th game as head coach of the Stags. He is currently tied with Jim Hanrahan and Fred Barakat for the second-most wins through 100 games as Fairfield head coach. The record belongs to the legendary George Bisacca, who went 66-34 in the first 100 games of his Hall of Fame career with the Stags.
Braden Sparks led the Stags with 19 points – including 14 in the first half of the wire-to-wire win. Also in the backcourt,
Deuce Turner came off the bench and netted 17 points with a pair of three-pointers.
In the post,
Isaac Munkadi drew the start and scored a career-best 13 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the field. He also pulled down eight rebounds in his 25 minutes of work.
Declan Wucherpfennig notched a double-double with 10 points and a game-high 17 rebounds, setting the pace as the Stags held a commanding 49-24 advantage on the glass.
Tony Williams added five points,
Eric Mejia scored four to go along with four rebounds and two steals, and the duo of
Michael Rogan and
Ryan Zan scored two apiece.
Overall, the Stags shot 31-for-60 (.517) from the field – their eighth game overall and sixth in MAAC play shooting at .500 or better from the floor.
Defensively, Fairfield held Siena to a season-low 58 points, as well as the Saints' worst field goal percentage (.355) and three-point percentage (.174) in MAAC play.

The winner of that game will secure a first round bye in next week's MAAC Championship, while the loser will be guaranteed to play in opening round in Atlantic City.
