FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball racked up 13 blocks and hit a scorching .341 to overpower visiting Quinnipiac and finish off a 3-0 sweep on Friday night at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The Metro Conference contest was televised live on SNY.
With the win, Fairfield improves to 10-5 overall and 4-0 in the Metro Conference. The Stags are the last remaining unbeaten team in Metro play. Quinnipiac slips to 3-12 on the season with a 2-2 league tally. Fairfield took the match by set scores of 25-9, 28-26, and 25-18.
"Our block was the biggest X factor in tonight's match. We had 13 in three sets and had solid touches on a lot more," said Head Coach
Nancy Somera. "Even with the second set coming down to the wire, it was great to close out a match in three sets when we had the opportunity."
Fairfield's 13 blocks were the third-most in a match for the Stags this season, and the highest total in a three-set contest this fall.
Harlan Wyche, who leads the Metro in blocks, had a hand in seven of the 13 rejections.
Emma Bortolotti,
Mamie Krubally, and
Sophia Nagy each got a piece of six, and
Katelyn Cook helped to send back one. The Fairfield frontline accounted for 13 of Quinnipiac's 28 attack errors as the Bobcats managed just an .035 team hitting percentage.
On the offensive end,
Mamie Krubally was the lone player in double figures with 11 kills. The Metro Conference Preseason Player of the Year hit a sizzling .625 this evening and it hitting .489 against league foes. Also on the right side tonight at Mahoney Arena, Bortolotti had nine kills at a .533 clip.
Katelyn Cook resumed her post on the left pin and racked up seven kills, while Wyche added five from the middle.
Zofia Sykut and
Noella Migliuri managed the attack to its .341 hitting percentage with 20 and 14 assists, respectively.
Rounding out the Fairfield scoring, Migliuri served up three service aces with Oldach and Sykut adding one winner apiece.
In the back row, Cook had a match-best 13 digs.
Natalie Carlin contributed eight from the libero spot and Oldach finished with six.
Quinnipiac was led by Asia Belli's eight kills on .636 hitting from the middle of the Bobcat offense.
Fairfield Volleyball returns to action tomorrow – Saturday, Oct. 3 – at 4 p.m. when Merrimack visits Leo D. Mahoney Arena. Admission is free for all fans to all regular season home matches.
