Strong Fourth Quarter Leads Stags Over Pioneers

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team used a 14-0 run between the third and fourth quarters while holding Sacred Heart off the scoreboard for over seven minutes, leading to a 60-43 victory over their crosstown rivals on Saturday. Cyanne Coe tallied eight of Fairfield's points during that stretch and Jillian Huerter added a pair of 3-pointers while setting a new career-high of 18 in the process.

"We showed some grit and toughness down the stretch," Head Coach Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "We finally put our offense and defense together in that fourth quarter. It wasn't perfect but I love that we were able to dig in and get stops and hold them to three points in the fourth quarter to get the win."

Fairfield (18-4; 12-1 MAAC) grabbed momentum going into that final period after Huerter drained a 3-pointer with three seconds left in the third to give Fairfield a 44-40 lead.

That would be the start of Fairfield's 14-0 run which featured another Huerter triple and eight points by Coe. Sacred Heart would not get a fourth quarter bucket until the 2:39 mark.

The Stags had to grind it out all game long, beginning with a tough offensive start – hitting just one of their first 12 shots. Fairfield would then go on a quick 8-1 run to grab their first lead of the afternoon 11-10 on a Huerter 3-pointer.

After trailing by three at halftime, the Pioneers fought back, tying the game at 32-32 four minutes into the third quarter.

In those final six minutes, there would be four lead changes and two tied scores.

One of those lead changes came from a layup from Meghan Andersen who tallied her 1,333rd career point, surpassing her mom's collegiate total as Denise Hammersley netted 1,331 in her career at Fordham.

She would also have the assist on Fairfield's next lead change as Sydni Scott swished through a triple to put the score at 37-35.

Huerter gave the Stags some breathing room with another clutch 3-pointer with three seconds left to set up a 44-40 score into the final quarter.

The Stags would score the first 11 points of that final quarter, highlighted by yet another big triple by Huerter to put Fairfield up by nine and forcing a Sacred Heart timeout. With the 3-pointer, Huerter set a new career-high besting her previous total set against Purdue during her freshman season at Rutgers.

Coe netted the other eight points during that spurt, and register 10 of the team's 16 fourth quarter points.

In total, the Stags ran up a game-deciding 14-0 run between the two quarter, holding Sacred Heart scoreless for over seven minutes of game time.

Huerter led the Stags with a new personal-best of 18 points while also tying a career-best with seven rebounds. Coe followed her with 15 points going 5-for-8 from the field and 5-for-8 from the free throw line.

L'Amoreaux tallied double-figures for the 20th time this season with 13 points and a team-high four assists.

Fairfield will have a pair of home games to open up the month of February, starting with welcoming Marist to Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Thursday night at 7pm.
