PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Fairfield University field hockey created ample opportunities inside the circle but could not find a way to find to push the ball over the goal line, falling to Brown University by a 1-0 count on the road. The Stags managed to take 10 shots in the match and put four of those on target, gaining multiple attempts in each of the first three quarters.
The home team put forth the first two scoring chances of the game by taking a pair of shots in the opening three minutes. The first shot was blocked before it became a danger while the second required a save from Fairfield goalkeeper
Payton Rahn. From that point, Fairfield's offense began to apply its own pressure inside the circle as
Noor Hellemans was responsible for a pair of shots off a penalty corner in the ninth minute of the quarter. Each team managed one more shot in the quarter, beginning with
Pilar Mengotti's tip that sailed over the goal and ending with Rahn's save on Kiersten Smith's shot in the 13th minute.
The second quarter showcased more offensive opportunities for Fairfield with the team combining for three shots in the first three minutes. Two of the attempts were on target but were turned away by Brown's goalkeeper Ellie Parker. In the 22nd minute, Brown became the first team to break through offensively when Lexi Pellegrino broke up the scoreless game. After taking a pass from Lucy Adams, Pellegrino found open space at the top of the circle and took a shot that Rahn kicked away. The ball rebounded back to Pellegrino who push the ball into the goal for a 1-0 Brown lead. Fairfield managed two more chances in the quarter, a shot from
Alex Senior that was blocked and an attempt by Mengotti which was saved by Parker.
Fairfield came out of halftime with a sense of urgency which resulted into two shots in the opening minutes of the half. The Stags were awarded a penalty corner which set up a shot by
Camille Perlov, but her shot was deflected away from danger by the goalkeeper. Just a few seconds later,
Konni Hofmann found herself in position to contribute with a shot but her attempt went wide of the goal. Brown rallied offensively over the final five minutes with four shots. However, three of those tries were wide of the target with the fourth attempt being turned aside by Rahn.
Neither team earned a shot in the final 15 minutes of the game, allowing Brown to keep its one-goal edge at the final whistle.
Fairfield is in the midst of a five-game road trip that will continue next weekend with the start of Northeast Conference (NEC) play. The Stags open conference play at Wagner College on Friday, September 19 for its only game of the week. Game time is slated for 3 pm.
