BOSTON, Mass. – In a battle between two reigning conference champions, it was the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team that came out on top as the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year
Maddy Theriault tallied another game-winning goal and dished out an assist in Fairfield's 2-1 win over Boston University. The win was also the Stags' first against the Terriers in program history.
"It was a tough and gritty performance on the road against a really good team," Head Coach
David Barrett said. "It wasn't our best soccer but it was effective which sometimes is all it takes."
All three goals in the match came in the second half, with Theriault having her presence felt in both of the Stags' scores. In the 55th minute, Theriault sent a cross towards the middle of the box where another Preseason All-MAAC selection
Sam Kersey was all alone and deposited the ball in the back of the net for her first score of the season.
After Boston University tied the match up 10 minutes later, it was the Stags who found a response.
Kelly O'Connor sent a ball towards the far post where
Ashlyn Walsh was able to redirect and find Theriault who pushed the eventual game-winning tally into the net for a 2-1 Fairfield advantage.
The goal was Theriault's second of the season and the 33rd of her career, putting her in a tie for third all-time. She also sits alone in second place with 13 career game-winning goals, fourth in points (84), and tied for eighth with 18 assists.
For the match, the Stags were narrowly out-shot 11-10 but held a 6-4 advantage with shots on goal. Goalkeeper
Katie Wright made three saves in picking up her 42nd career win.
After playing three road games to open the season, the Stags will compete in their 2025 home opener on Lessing Field when they welcome Vermont on Sunday at 4pm. Admission will be free for all fans as part of the Stags' free summer soccer.
