FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team will continue their three-game season opening road trip when they travel to Rutgers to face the Scarlet Knights on Sunday at 5pm. This will be the first-ever meeting between the two schools.
Both programs will bring a 1-0 record into the match after earning shutout victories in their season openers. The Stags were led by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Preseason Player of the Year
Maddy Theriault after she struck a left-footed highlight reel goal for Fairfield's first score of the season.
Goalkeeper
Katie Wright recorded her 41st career victory and her 19th career clean sheet by picking up six saves in an impressive season debut. The senior made her best stop in the 18th minute by fully extending to her right to stop a shot. She also provided a key stop in the final five minutes and intercepted other Crusader attacking opportunities.
Theriault moved into a tie for fourth-place in the Fairfield record book with her 32nd career goal and now ranks second with 12 game-winning tallies. She also places fourth with 81 career points.
Rutgers scored three times in their season opening win and out-shot their NJIT opponent by a 21-3 margin. The Scarlet Knights earned an At-Large bid into last year's NCAA Tournament after posting an 11-5-5 overall record. Among that record was a 10-match unbeaten streak which featured seven-straight shutouts by goalkeeper Olivia Bodmer.
Graduate transfer Nata Ramirez, who earned First Team All-Ivy honors at Columbia, dished out two assists in the team's victory over the Highlanders.
Fairfield will continue their road trip with a visit to the Patriot League Preseason favorites Boston University on Thursday at 6pm.
