ARLINGTON, Va. – The Fairfield University Baseball team scored four times in the top of the eighth to complete the three-game sweep of George Washington with a 6-4 final score on Sunday.
Sean Meth lined a two-run triple to give the Stags the late lead and
Brendon Miller hung on for the save with the winning run at the plate.
Billy Sullivan tied the game in the top of the second with his first homer as a Stag. That 1-1 score would stay as
Kyle Lesler put in five solid innings allowing just the one run on five hits while striking out two.
Luke Nomura broke the tied score as he roped the first pitch he saw, plating
Jack Byrne to put the Stags up 2-1. The Revolutionaries, however, would take the lead in the sixth and add an insurance run in the seventh to put the score at 4-2.
Fairfield rallied in the eighth as the first four batters reached base starting with a
Nolan Colby double and a
Dean Ferrara single. Nomura brought home the first run of the frame with a RBI single, setting the stage for Meth's big two-run triple and the Fairfield lead.
Tyler Kipp would add an insurance run with a single up the middle and putting the score at 6-4.
Miller would earn the two-inning save, starting by striking out the first two batters he saw in the eighth. George Washington would get two of their first three batters on base to start the ninth, getting the tying run on base. Miller would settle down getting the net two hitters to fly out to center to end the game and secure the series sweep.
Ferrara and Nomura led the Stags with two hits apiece while
Matthew Bucciero would reach base three times on three walks.
Will Fox picked up the win with 0.2 scoreless innings.
The Stags will now play their first mid-week game of the season, traveling to Hofstra on Tuesday at 3pm.
