FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Nolan Colby and
Nick Sturino both went yard in the 2025 home opener, but St. John's scored five runs in the late innings to take a 7-5 decision over the Fairfield University Baseball team.
Fairfield plated the first two runs of the game starting with a
Matthew Bucciero RBI single through the left side in the first inning. The reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week
Nolan Colby doubled that scored with his second homer of the spring in the second.
St. John's would even the score in the third as two runs scored on a throwing error.

Jimmy Mulvaney before running into trouble in the eighth. The Stags got the first two men out in the eighth, but the Red Storm would start a rally with six-straight batters reaching base. St. John's had three hits in the frame with an Adam Agresti double and Luke Orbon single highlighting the frame before Sturino threw out another runner at the plate to end the damage.
Trailing by three in the ninth, the Stags attempted a rally of their own.
Luke Nomura and Bucciero would draw one-out walks before
Tyler Kipp singled home a run. Sturino would walk to load the bases and have the tying run in scoring position, but St. John's would force a pop up and groundout to end the game.
Dean Ferrara extended his hitting streak to 27-straight game with a pair of hits with Kipp and Colby also picking up multiple base knocks.
The Stags will continue their five-game home stand with their first conference home series of the year as they host Siena for a three-game set starting Friday at 3pm.
