TEANECK, N.J. – Matthew Bucciero broke a tie game with a solo shot in the ninth inning as the Fairfield University Baseball team grabbed their seventh-straight win with a 3-2 victory over Manhattan.
Ben Alekson led on the mound with eight strong innings, giving up just a two-run homer in the third.
"Ben kept us in the game long enough for the hitters to finally win the game," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "A good grind it out win when things were not happening offensively with runners on base. Happy to see
Nolan Colby get his first collegiate homer."
Colby's first collegiate homer opened the scoring for the game as his solo shot gave the Stags a 1-0 lead in the second.
Dean Ferrara would extend his hitting streak to 23-straight with a double and
Luke Nomura brought him home with a RBI single.
Alekson's only hiccup came in the third inning when Jeremy Sosa clubbed a game-tying two-run shot.
In total, Alekson gave up just four hits and two walks while striking out six in his eight innings of work. He would retire 15 of the 16 hitters he faced after the third with the only runner reaching base on an error.
The 2-2 score lasted until the ninth when Bucciero slugged his go-ahead solo shot the opposite way to put the game at 3-2.
Kevin Kell would come in relief and shut down Manhattan in a perfect ninth on seven pitches to pick up his third save of the season.
The Stags tallied five hits with Nomura leading the team with a pair.
Nick Sturino reached base three times with three of the team's nine walks.
The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow to close out the series starting at 11am.
