Stags Fall in Ninth to Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – The Fairfield University Baseball team allowed three runs in the bottom on the ninth inning including the walk-off single to Jordan Jaffe as the Stags dropped the rubber game 11-10 against the Spiders. The Stags belted three home runs in the contest with Sean Meth, Luke Nomura, and Tyler Kipp all going yard.

The Stags jumped out to a 9-1 lead by plating nine unanswered runs in the second and third innings. Nomura started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to bring home Nick Sturino.

Meth had the biggest hit of the frame as he crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left field wall for a three-run shot and to give Fairfield a 4-1 advantage.

Sturino would double in the right center field gap to score the team's first run of the third and Ferrara would add another sacrifice fly – the team's seventh in their first six games – to make the score 6-1. Nomura highlighted the frame by slamming a 0-1 pitch the other way for a three-run shot, his first of the spring.

The Stags' bats would not stay hot, however, as Richmond responded with seven-straight runs to cut the Fairfield lead to one run at 9-8 with three runs in the eighth, all with two outs. Peter Phillips came in to strand the tying run at second and preserve the lead.

Kipp would give the Stags some breathing room with a solo shot on the first pitch he saw in the ninth to bring Fairfield ahead 10-8.

Richmond, however, would load the bases on a walk and two hit batters leading to a two-run single by Peter Bernstein to tie up the game. Jaffe would then end the game with a single up the middle.

Ferrara, Nomura, and Sturino all led the Stags with two hits apiece with Sturino also scoring a pair of runs.

Kevin Kell was the lone Stag to hurl a scoreless inning as he retired the side on just 11 pitches with a strikeout.

The Stags will head back to the state of Virginia to take on James Madison for a three game set starting on Friday at 3pm.
