WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team was edged by the MEAC preseason favorites Howard Bison by a 72-69 decision on the road.
Kaety L'Amoreaux led the Stags with 23 points, her eighth career 20-point game. Fairfield will now close out their non-conference slate with a road matchup against Richmond on Sunday at 2pm.
The Stags started the game hot from the outside, hitting seven 3-pointers at a 58 percent clip in the first quarter, leading by as many as 13 in the period.
Meghan Andersen and L'Amoreaux both hit their first long-range shots as the Stags started off the game on an 8-0 run.
Christina Pham would hit a pair of 3-pointers and
Jillian Huerter drilled one of her own to increase the Fairfield lead to 17-4, their largest of the contest.
Sydni Scott would hit back-to-back 3-pointers to put the lead back to 13 towards the end of the quarter.
Fairfield would not have the same shooting touch in the second as Howard went on a 10-1 run to get within a point on an April Edwards 3-pointer. The Bison would eventually get their first lead of the contest in the final minute of the first half on a Zoe Stewart pullup jumper.
The Howard lead would stretch to double-digits after starting the second half on an 11-2 spurt. Fairfield would get back in the game by pulling off seven-straight points capped by an Andersen 3-pointer.
The Stags netted five points in the final minute of the third quarter with Scott drilling a three from the wing to put the Stags within a possession.
Fairfield would tie the game as Andersen opened the fourth with a bucket and then used two L'Amoreaux triples and a Huerter 3-pointer to grab a three-point lead at the 7:30 mark.
The Stags would eventually increase that lead to five after a pair of L'Amoreaux free throws at the 3:18 mark to put the score at 66-61. Howard would get a bucket and eight free throws to overcome that deficit and grab a 71-66 lead in the final minute.
Fairfield fought back on the back of L'Amoreaux whose driving layup put the squad back within a possession. The Stags would have one final chance at tying the game with their final possession, but could not get a shot off for a 72-69 setback.
The two-time MAAC Player of the Week, L'Amoreaux led the Stags with 23 points while also grabbing a team-best seven rebounds.
Fairfield will be back in action as they close out non-conference play with a visit to Richmond on Sunday at 2pm.
