FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will ring in the new year by hosting the Canisius Golden Griffins at Leo D. Mahoney Arena on Thursday at 2pm. The Stags will be riding a five-game winning streak into the contest including their unblemished 3-0 record in the conference. This will be the second time in program history and the first time since 1999 that Fairfield will be playing on New Year's Day.
Fairfield is coming off another 84-point performance in their win at Manhattan. It is the third-straight game the Stags have recorded 80 or more points, becoming the first Fairfield team since the 2000-01 squad to achieve that feat.
For the sixth-straight game, the Stags were led in scoring by
Kaety L'Amoreaux who poured in 24 points, her third-straight outing reach the 20-point mark. L'Amoreaux increased her conference-leading scoring average to 20.4 points per game, a number that ranks 15th in the nation. She also brought her career total to 966, and is 34 points shy of becoming the 36th Stag to reach 1,000 points in her career.
The Stags dished out 19 assists on a season-low nine turnovers in the win over the Jaspers. For the season, the Stags lead the MAAC in nearly every offensive category including: scoring offense (79.2), field goal percentage (.464), assists (17.5), 3-pointers per game (nation-leading 12.3), 3-point percentage (.398), and free throw percentage (.821).
Canisius will bring a 2-9 overall record and an 0-2 conference mark into the new year. Shariah Gailes is the team's leader with 14.3 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.
The Stags will host the other Western New York squad when Niagara comes to town on Saturday at 2pm.
