FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men's Basketball was outpaced by visiting Columbia, 106-77, on Wednesday evening at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The Stags were led by a career-high 19 points from
Cam Estevez, who shot 8-for-11 from the field with a pair of three pointers.
The loss ends a three-game winning streak for the Stags, who now stand at 4-3. Columbia improves to 6-1 with their lone setback this season coming at the hands of then-#3 UConn.
"Columbia outplayed us in just about every facet," said Head Coach
Chris Casey. "It's a lesson learned as far as the level we need to be at to compete and to beat good teams."
In addition to Estevez's 19 points,
Deuce Turner scored 14 to mark his fourth consecutive game in doubles figures.
Declan Wucherpfennig added 13 points and dished out three assists, with
Nasir Rodriguez contributing nine points from the bench.
A total of nine Stags fueled the scoring, with
Braden Sparks netting eight points,
Brandon Benjamin with six,
Tony Williams with five points to go along with three assists,
Halon Rawlins with two, and
Eric Mejia scoring one. Benjamin also hauled in a game-best and new career-high 11 rebounds, including six from the offensive glass, and blocked two shots.
As a team, Fairfield shot 40.8% from the field (29-71), 32% (8-25) from three-point range, and 68.8% (11-16) from the free throw line.
Columbia had five players in double figures led by 23 points from Blair Thompson and 20 points with seven assists from Kenny Noland. The Lions shot 62.5% (40-64) from the floor fueled by a 55% showing (11-20) from three-point range, one game after draining a program-record 18 treys in a win over Longwood.
