FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield University swimming and diving programs picked up a split in today's tri-meet, sweeping Colgate University and dropping decisions to Boston University.
The Stags men's team eclipsed the Raiders by a 223.0 to 70.0 score while the women posted a 186.0 to 114.0 win. Against the Terriers, the Fairfield men's team was edged by a 169.0 to 130.0 count while the women's team came up short by a 160.0 to 139.0 count.
Andrew Cataldo picked up two of the two team's 13 first-place finishes, sweeping the 1-meter and 3-meter dives. The sophomore earned a NCAA zone cut with his performance on the 1-meter board, tallying 304.70 points which was the only total to surpass 300 points in the event. He completed the sweep by posting 276.10 points in the 3-meter dive, winning the event by nearly 20 points. Joseph Stewart and Ed Hunt also garnered two top spots, with Stewart taking the 200 free (1:42.18) and the 100 free (46.39) and Hunt securing the 200 fly (1:53.16) and the 200 IM (1:54.61).
On the women's side,
Tone Sandsjoe and
Erin Hoyland collected a pair of wins in their respective events as Sandsjoe dominated the breaststroke and Hoyland saw her success come in the freestyle. Hoyland the touched the wall first in the 1000 with her time of 10:33.54 and in the 500 free with a time of 5:08.16. Sandsjoe registered the top time in the 100 by completing the distance in 1:04.62 and the 200 by garnering a time of 2:25.36.
The Stags opened the event by netting the best time in the women's 200 medley relay (1:45.81) behind the efforts of
Erini Pappas,
Tone Sandsjoe),
Lara Kisakol, and
Olivia Thompson). Pappas would come back a little later to earn her own individual first-place performance, taking the 100 back in 58.43. Thompson also garnered a first-place swim by winning the 50 free with a time of 24.63.
Fairfield started a run of three straight weekends that includes dual meets over the next two weekends. The Stags will travel to Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe Iona College on January 18 before hosting UMass on January 25 at the RecPlex Pool. Against UMass, diving will begin at 11 am followed by the swimming event starting at approximately 1 pm.
