First Midweek Matchup Sends Stags to St. John’s

Fairfield visits the Red Storm for a Wednesday evening clash in Queens

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A second straight Big East opponent awaits Fairfield University Volleyball as the Stags head to Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday evening to challenge St. John's. First serve in Queens is set for 6 p.m.
 
Fairfield University Stags (2-7, 0-0 MAAC)
  • Fairfield is coming off of an 0-3 weekend at the Yale Invitational. The Stags fell to Colgate and Yale in New Haven before hosting Villanova to cap the tournament at Mahoney Arena on Sunday.
  • The Stags won the first set in all three matches this past weekend, including a 2-0 lead over Yale before the Bulldogs rallied to preserve the nation's third longest home winning streak (27).
  • One of the hallmarks of Fairfield's 2023 MAAC Championship season, the Stags have boasted a balanced offense with five hitters averaging at least 1.7 kills per set. Mamie Krubally tops that chart with 2.42 finishers per frame.
 
St. John's Red Storm (7-3, 0-0 Big East)
  • St. John's most recently went 2-1 at the Penn State Invitational, defeating Princeton and Duke before falling to the host #3 Nittany Lions.
  • The Red Storm at 4-0 at Carnesecca Arena this season with wins over Niagara, Northeastern, Coppin State and NJIT.
  • Erin Jones and Giorgia Walther lead St. John's with 3.49 and 3.45 kills per set, respectively.
  • Jones also owns a triple-double this season with 13 kills, 26 assists and 12 digs in the five-set "reverse sweep" win over Princeton last Friday.
  • St. John's is Fairfield's seventh opponent this season that finished 2023 with a top 100 RPI. The Red Storm wrapped up the year with an RPI of 49 after finishing 24-11 with trips to the Big East Championship Match and the NIVC Second Round.
