Stags Dominate Fordham with 5-0 Win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer team dominated the previously unbeaten Fordham Rams with a 5-0 victory on Lessing Field in their final tune-up before conference play. The Stags were led by a pair of goals from Maddy Theriault, one from Dana Nadda, and the first collegiate goals by Kaitlyn McQueeney and Kacie Benn.

"We left some stuff on the field to be honest," Head Coach David Barrett said. "We could have finished more service in the final third and be a little sharper. There's some micro things we need to do at a higher level to keep going, but overall obviously I'm pleased with the performance. It's been a busy month for us since we got here August 1, so heading into conference play we're feeling pretty good about ourselves and excited to get going next Saturday."

Theriault scored the first two goals for the Stags (4-1), coming in the sixth and 21st minutes. Sam Kersey set up the opening score with a shot on goal that was saved by the Fordham goalkeeper but Theriault chased down the rebound to open the scoring.

Alex Darcy picked up the assist on the second goal as she sent a cross to the right post that Theriault got her shoulder on and flicked it into the net to put the Stags up 2-0.

Fairfield netted their third on a penalty kick when Anya Moser was sent down in the box and Nadda converted her opportunity for her first goal of the season.

The Stags added a pair in the second half, both being the first collegiate goals for McQueeney and Benn. Ashlyn Walsh created the first chance as she rifled a ball into the box that was deflected away but found the foot of McQueeney to put the Stags up 4-0.

Benn had the highlight reel goal on a one-timer sent in by Kayleigh Lukasik and rifled into the top corner for her first collegiate points.

In total, the Stags out-shot the Rams 15-9 with a 9-1 advantage on shots on goal. A trio of Fairfield goalkeepers combined for the shutout with Wright making the only save of the game.

Fairfield will next open up MAAC play and continue their five-game home stand with a visit from Rider on Saturday at 1:30pm.
