Matt Scott Joins Fairfield Basketball to Complete 2024-25 Coaching Staff

Scott was an All-MAAC player at Niagara

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men's Basketball Head Coach Chris Casey has announced the addition of Matt Scott to complete the Stags' coaching staff for the 2024-25 season. Scott was coached by Casey at Niagara University from 2014-18, where he was an All-MAAC performer for the Purple Eagles.

"Matt was an exceptional player and a great representative of our team at Niagara, and I'm thrilled to have him join our staff here at Fairfield," said Casey. "He is a very talented player with a high IQ for the game. Matt's experience as a successful student-athlete in our conference will be a great asset for the young men in our program."

Scott played in 122 games over four years led by Coach Casey at Niagara. He was a three-time All-MAAC selection, garnering Third Team laurels in 2015-16 and 2016-17 before capping his career as an All-MAAC Second Team and NABC All-District First Team honoree in 2017-18. Scott ranks seventh all-time in scoring for the Purple Eagles with 1,726 career points.

After earning a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management from Niagara, Scott went on to play professionally for Niners Chemnitz in the German ProA League followed by a stint with the London City Royals in the British Basketball League. Since returning stateside, the Brooklyn native has served as a youth basketball coach and physical education teacher in New York City.

Scott is one of four assistant coaches on Coach Casey's staff. He joins returning coaches Glenn Braica and Taj Benning as well as Matt Knezovic, who has been named an Assistant Coach after serving as Fairfield's Director of Basketball Operations last season.

"Glenn and Taj were outstanding additions to our coaching staff last year. They are both excellent coaches and great people, and I am excited to have them back for the upcoming season," Casey said. "Matt displayed very strong basketball knowledge during his time as our DOBO, and we look forward to having him more involved in practices, scouting and on the sideline this year."

On the administrative side, Chuck Asetta has been named Director of Men's Basketball Operations after serving as the program's graduate assistant last season. Asetta previously acted as a team manager during his undergraduate tenure at Fairfield for three years.

The Graduate Assistant role has been assumed by Bobby Steinberg. Steinberg is a 2024 Fairfield graduate and a four-year team manager, graduating as a Dean's List student with a double major in Finance and Accounting.

In addition, Mike Jarvis II has returned full-time to his position as Associate Director of Athletics/Associate Director of Athletic Development. Jarvis – a coaching veteran with more than 20 years of Division I experience – joined the men's basketball staff as a Staff Assistant in January of 2024 through the remainder of the campaign.

"I'm thankful that Mike was able to be part of our staff last season, and grateful to Wally Halas and Brett Burchette for allowing him to join us," said Casey. "We all look forward to having Mike continue to serve as an important member of our Fairfield Basketball family in his role in the Athletic Development office."

Fairfield Men's Basketball finished with a 24-13 record in 2023-24. The Stags placed second in the MAAC regular season at 14-6 and went on to reach the MAAC Championship Game as well as the CBI Semifinals.
