FAIRFIELD, Conn.-The Fairfield University men's tennis team continued to roll along on a chilly and blustery Saturday afternoon at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts, as the Stags remained unbeaten in conference play at 3-0 and earned their sixth victory in a row to up their season mark to 9-8, as Fairfield topped the Rider University Broncs, 6-1. Rider is now 4-15 overall and 1-1 in the MAAC.
The Stags got off to a quick start on Saturday earning the doubles point, as they swept all three matches, as Thomas Smart and Sam Hodges won at number one, 6-4. Nick Condos and Will O'Brien prevailed at number two, 6-3, and Luca Benaibbouche and Kostas Kollias blanked the opposition at number three, 6-0.
After sweeping the doubles point, Fairfield blazed through the singles flights taking five of the six matches on the strength of straight sets wins at number one from Thomas Smart, number two from Sam Hodges, number five from Kostas Kollias and Griffin Schlesinger in the sixth slot.
Nick Condos posted a hard-fought, three-set, super tiebreaker win at number three singles, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8.
Said head coach Jeff Bricker, "The guys came out strong from the start and played with a ton of energy. The conditions were less than ideal, but they handled it well. We can't wait to celebrate Keean and Senior Day on Sunday."
Up next, the men's tennis team will play its final non-conference match of 2024 and celebrate Senior Day on Sunday at 12 noon when the Stonehill College Skyhawks come to the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
