Stags Take Series Opener From Siena

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Nick Sturino and Zach Selinger combined for six RBI and Matt Bergevin added a two-run blast as the Fairfield University Baseball team opened up their three-game series with a 9-2 win over Siena. Bowen Baker tallied his fifth win of the year as the Stags improved to 11-2 in the MAAC and a second-place tie in the MAAC.

"The difference of the game was two long balls that accounted for five runs," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "We hit some hard balls at them today but did a good job of staying in the zone. Bo Bake did a great job battling without a lot of his secondary stuff today. I'm really proud of him battling and the relievers coming in and throwing up three zeroes."

Selinger's two-run bloop single opened the scoring for the Stags (21-20; 11-2 MAAC) in the first after the Stags loaded the bases in their first at-bats.

Fairfield would load the bases again in the second following back-to-back singles from Paul Catalano and Dean Ferrara and a Matt Bucciero walked. Ethan Hibbard cashed in on the opportunity as he lifted a sacrifice fly to right and put the score at 3-0.

The Stags saw that lead trimmed to 3-2 after Siena plated a pair in the top of the fifth, but the Stags would answer in the bottom half. With runners on the corners, Selinger drilled a RBI single up the middle and doubled the lead at 4-2.

Sturino would cap the inning as he sliced a ball over the right field foul pole for a three-run shot and gave the Stags a 7-2 advantage.

On the mound, Bowen Baker battled through six innings striking out seven along the way. Baker ended his outing in a big way, striking out the side in the sixth. He surrendered just two runs in picking up his fifth win of the year.

Bergevin capped the scoring with a long two-run opposite field homer in the eighth to account for the 9-2 final. The long ball was Bergevin's 13th of the season, the second-most in the MAAC.

Kevin Kell would come in relief and fired two scoreless frames and Peter Phillips shut the door with a scoreless ninth.

Selinger led the Stags with three hits as part of his 3-for-4 day. Bergevin was the other Stag with multiple hits as he picked up a pair including his two-run homer.

The two teams will play the middle game of the series tomorrow and officially dedicate Don and Chris Cook Field with a special ceremony. The dedication will begin at 12:45pm with first pitch scheduled for 1:15.
