TRUMBULL, Conn.-It was a long day's journey into night on Saturday for the Fairfield University men's tennis team, but worth the wait for the Stags, who earned their ninth straight victory and remained unbeaten in conference play at 5-0 with a 4-0 sweep of the Niagara University Purple Eagles. Saturday's match was originally slated to begin in the early afternoon on campus at the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts, but the inclement weather forced the match to be moved indoors at Tennis Cub of Trumbull with a 6:00 p.m. first serve.
Fairfield is now 12-8 overall, and the Purple Eagles slip to 7-5 overall and 2-3 in the MAAC.
Saturday's victory sets up a Tuesday afternoon showdown for the Stags, who are looking for a perfect regular season conference mark, when the Quinnipiac University Bobcats come to town for a 3:00 p.m. match. QU will host Niagara on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 conference record before heading to the Walsh Athletic Center Tennis Courts.
Fairfield battled to capture Saturday's doubles point, as Thomas Smart and Sam Hodges won at number one, 6-4 and Nick Condos and Will O'Brien prevailed at number two, 7-5.
After taking the doubles point, the Stags put the match away with straight sets wins at number two from Sam Hodges, number three for Nick Condos and at number five from Kostas Kollias.
Said a happy head coach Jeff Bricker after Saturday's match, "The guys came out and played great! The doubles was a battle, and once we got to singles we played excellent and came through with the win!"
Tuesday's match with Quinnipiac at the WAC courts will be available live on Playsight. Fairfield has already clinched a berth in the MAAC Championship, set for next weekend April 20-21 in West Windsor, N.J.
