FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The No. 25 Fairfield University Women's Basketball team added another chapter in their historic season as they closed out a perfect 20-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Regular Season with an 83-54 win against Rider at the Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The Stags become the second MAAC team ever to achieve a 20-0 conference mark and the eighth to go undefeated in conference play. Fairfield holds the most conference wins in the nation with their 20 victories.
The win increases the Stags' overall record to 28-1 and also extends their winning streak to 26-straight games, both the second-highest totals in the country.
"I'm just so thankful we have a group that has stuck together the way they have day in and day out," Head Coach
Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "They've played the game the right way and come out with something to prove today. They know it's bigger than just one game. Not only do we want to make some history and accomplish something that has never been done here but we want to go into Atlantic City playing our best basketball."
Four Stags reached double-figures in the victory led by a career-high 16 points by
Karly Fischer.
Kaety L'Amoreaux followed with 15 while drilling five 3-pointers. The Stags shot 52 percent in the contest, the 11th time this season the Stags have shot at least 50 percent.
The Stags led wire-to-wire after scoring the first 3-pointer of the game from L'Amoreaux which would start a 10-0 run. Fairfield would build their first quarter lead to 18 after grabbing a 22-4 advantage. The Stags held the Broncs to a 1-for-9 mark in the first 10 minutes while forcing six turnovers.
After scoring the first six points of the second quarter, the Stags completed an 11-0 run on a
Kendall McGruder 3-pointer that put them in front 28-4.
The Stags led by as many as 33 with five minutes left in the fourth quarter after a pair of Fischer free throws.
Fischer led the reserves with her 16 points as the Fairfield bench tallied 38 points in the game. Mackenzie Daleba, who was one of three Stags celebrating Senior Day, had her second-straight double-digit performance with 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Ten different Stags would score at least two points.
The Fairfield defense also forced 22 turnovers, the second-straight game forcing 20 or more miscues. L'Amoreaux led the defensive effort with five steals.
Fairfield extends their winning streak to 26-straight games, one shy of tying the 2010-11 Marist squad for the longest in MAAC history. They also become just the second MAAC squad ever to finish a regular season with just one loss, dating back to the 1988-89 La Salle squad.
The Stags will now turn their attention to the most important part of their schedule: the 2024 Hercules Tires MAAC Championship in Atlantic City, N.J. As the tournament's top overall seed, the Stags have earned a bye into the Quarterfinal round and will take on the winner of No. 8 Rider and No. 9 Iona on Wednesday at 1pm.
