FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Iona behind dominant pitching from
Colin McVeigh and a two home run day by
Matt Bergevin to account for the 12-0 final score. McVeigh tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout while striking out eight and Bergevin drove in six runs in the first two innings as the Stags improved to 3-0 in the MAAC.
"It's good to see our starters put in some good length in their games and throw well," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "It's great to see Colin back as a starter and he really did a great job today. Bergevin staked us out quick and certainly gave us a jump start on the offensive line."
Bergevin accounted for the first six runs for the Stags as he launched three-run homers in both the first and second innings to stake the team to an early 6-0 advantage. Fairfield totaled seven runs over the first two frames with
Matt Bucciero also lining a RBI double in the second.
Fairfield scored a pair of runs on just two hits in the fourth with
Payten Wawruck drawing a bases loaded walk and Hibbard would later score on a wild pitch.
Zach Selinger plated a run with a single through the left side in the sixth and Hibbard completed the scoring in the seventh with a RBI single, his 42nd run driven in of the season.
That was more than enough for McVeigh as the right-hander was dominant allowing just two hits without a walk in his full seven innings. He allowed just a single in the third and fourth innings while allowing just one runner in scoring position. He was economical in his outing needing only 83 pitches to complete the run-ruled contest.
Dean Ferrara and Hibbard led the Stags with three hits a piece with Ferrara and Bergevin also scoring three runs.
The Stags are scheduled for two mid-week games next week, traveling to St. John's on Tuesday at 3pm and then hosting UMass on Wednesday with first pitch at 3pm.
