FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team drilled nine home runs with four coming from
Ethan Hibbard and three off the bat of
Matt Bucciero as the team pulled out two wins on the day with a 10-8 victory over Fordham and a 14-3 decision over Army West Point in the first two games at Don and Chris Cook Field.
Matt Bergevin also slugged a pair of long balls in the nightcap.
Game One: Fairfield 10, Fordham 8
The power bats of the Stags were display early as Hibbard began his career day with a two-run homer in the first. Hibbard would club three homers, tying the program's single-game mark. He would also slug a two-run shot in the third and a solo shot in the sixth, both clearing the centerfield wall.
Ryan Strollo added three hits, all doubles and also driving in three runs. He brought in a pair in the second and one in the eighth to close out the 10-run output.
Bucciero would also add an opposite field solo shot in the third.
On the mound,
Colin McVeigh tossed 5.2 innings in relief and picked up the win while striking out six.
Game Two: Fairfield 14, Army West Point 3
The Stags continued their power surge in the nightcap against Army West Point with five home runs. Bergevin and Bucciero both homered twice and drove in six runs apiece.
Bergevin started the home run barrage with a two-run shot in the third. After Hibbard reached base, Bucciero blasted his two-run shot over the right center field wall.
After the Black Knights cut the 4-0 lead to just one run in the fourth, Bergevin opened the flood gates with a grand slam to left. Hibbard would go back-to-back with a solo shot and his fourth home run on the day. He leads the team with eight long balls and 29 RBI.
Bucciero would put an exclamation mark on the contest with his own grand slam in the fifth.
On the rubber,
Blake Helmstetter threw all seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out eight.
The Stags are back in action tomorrow when they complete their busy weekend at Fordham at 3pm.
