GREENSBORO, N.C. – For the second-straight game, the Fairfield University Baseball team plated five runs in a single inning, but it was not enough as UNC Greensboro overtook the lead late leading to a 12-7 decision over the Stags.
Matt Bergevin led the team with three hits to bring his average to .400 over the first weekend and
Luke Nomura launched his first career home run in the setback.
The Stags scored the first two runs of the game as
Matt Lussier skipped home on a passed ball after legging out a triple to start the game.
Ethan Hibbard doubled the score in the third with a two-out RBI double to plate Bergevin, the first of his two runs scored.
After the Spartans tied the game in the fourth, the Stags answered with their biggest inning by putting up a five-spot in the fifth.
Matt Bucciero had the first big hit with a two-run triple, Fairfield's fifth triple in the opening weekend.
TJ Schmalzle would bring him home with a run-scoring single and Nomura capped the frame by launching his first career long ball.
The Spartans, however, would answer with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. They would grab the lead in the seventh on a Jake Ogden single and a Fairfield error that plated two runs.
Bergevin led the Stags offensively with his second-straight three-hit game while also scoring two runs. Hibbard would collect his fourth double in the first three games and also drive in a run. Nomura capped an impressive season start with his two-run homer to increase his team lead of six RBI.
On the pitching side,
Ben Alekson struck out seven in his first career start.
Fairfield is back in action next weekend when they open a three-game series at James Madison starting on Friday at 3pm.
