Selimovic’s Last Second Shot Caps Wild Win at the Mount and Extend Winning Streak to 20-Straight

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Emina Selimovic converted the game-winning layup in the final second to cap a wild finish at Mount St. Mary's with a 61-59 win. The Stags scored eight points in the final 30 seconds with two big 3-pointers from Kaety L'Amoreaux and Selimovic's last second heroics to run their winning streak to 20-straight. L'Amoreaux carried the Stags in the second half by going 6-for-8 from 3-point range in the final 20 minutes and tying her career-high with 20 points.

"What a gutsy win," Head Coach Carly Thibault-DuDonis said. "We talked going into the game that we would have to show some grit. Mount is playing great and we knew they were playing great defensively. We knew it was going to take the entire 40 minutes and we took all 40 to get that win. I'm just proud of us for not hanging our head and continuing to fight with some grit."

Fairfield (22-1, 14-0 MAAC) had to erase a double-digit deficit with four minutes left in the third quarter as they trailed 42-30. The Stags would start their comeback by connecting on the final three field goals of the quarter with L'Amoreaux hitting two huge long-range shots including one that beat the third quarter buzzer to cut the deficit to 44-40.

L'Amoreaux would also drain back-to-back trifectas in the first three minutes of the final quarter to put the Stags within a point at 48-47.

The Stags would gain their first lead of the game momentarily as Janelle Brown rushed to the lane and finished the layup to put the road team up 50-49.

That lead would only last 12 seconds, however, as the Mount went on a quick 6-0 spurt to grab a five-point lead into the final two minutes.

That's when the Stags found their dramatic touch by netting 10 crucial points in the final 1:14. Brown started the rally with a driving layup followed by a defensive stop. L'Amoreaux hit another huge shot, tying the game with 30 seconds left on a triple. She would get her number called again on the next possession and drained another 3-pointer to put the Stags up by two with 14 seconds left.

The Mount would answer right back with Jessica Tomasetti driving the length of the court and pushing through the game-tying bucket with three seconds left.

On the ensuing inbounds play, Izabela Nicoletti-Leite lobbed the pass into the paint where Selimovic was able to corral the throw and swish through the bucket to give the Stags a wild win.

Coming off an injury, L'Amoreaux carried the Stags in the second half by going 6-for-8 from long-range in the final 20 minutes, while hitting all six of Fairfield's second half 3-pointers.

"She's tough," Coach Carly said. "She stays ready. I never doubt her for a second that she's going the be ready to go when her number is called. Obviously she was battling back from an injury but I'm really proud of how she showed up for us today."

The Stags trailed by as many as 14 with the Mount grabbing an early 16-2 lead as the Stags shot only 33 percent in the first half.

Fairfield would recover with a .538 shooting percentage in the second half and an 8-for-12 mark in the fourth.

L'Amoreaux led all scorers and tied her career-high with 20 points with six 3-pointers. Brown followed with 18 points and a team-high seven assists while grabbing seven rebounds.

Fairfield will hit the road again on Thursday night, traveling to Siena to face the Saints at 7pm.
