FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will welcome the Villanova Wildcats to the Leo D. Mahoney Arena for a Sunday afternoon contest with tip-off at 2pm. The Stags will be meeting Villanova for the 13th time in program history and are looking for their first win in the series.
The Stags exploded for 94 points in their last win over Staten Island, marking the 750th win in their Division I history.
Izabela Nicoletti Leite was the orchestrator of the offense as the graduate student dished out a career-high 11 assists including the 250th of her career. Her 11 assists was tied for the 13th most in a Division I game this season and the most by a Stag in two years. She also became just the fifth player in the NCAA this season to record 11 or more assists without committing a turnover. For the season, she lead the MAAC and ranks third in the nation with a 4.11 assist-turnover ratio and also paces the MAAC with 5.3 assists per game.
The Stags connected on 13 3-pointers in their win, the fifth time this season they have reached double-digit trifectas. Fairfield leads the conference and places ninth nationally with 10.4 made 3-pointers per game.
Freshman
Julia Karpell paced the long-range shooting offense with a career-high six made 3s on just eight attempts. She became the second Fairfield freshman ever to hit six or more 3-pointers in a game joining teammate
Kaety L'Amoreaux who accomplished the feat at Mount St. Mary's last season. Her 6-8 showing was also tied for the fourth-best in a game in Fairfield history.
Villanova enters the game with a 5-4 record after a setback to Temple on Friday. Jasmine Bascoe is the team leader with a 15.8 points per game average and has reached double-figures in eight of her first nine collegiate games.
The Stags will next close out the non-conference portion of their schedule against another Big East squad, traveling to St. John's next Sunday at 2pm.
