Stags’ Season Ends in NCAA Tournament First Round

WASHINGTON, DC. – The Fairfield University Women's Soccer's historic 2024 season came to an end Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament First Round as they fell to the Big East Regular Season Champions Georgetown Hoyas 3-0 at Shaw Field. The Stags enjoyed one of the best seasons in school history, tying the program-record with 18 wins while also claiming the MAAC Regular Season and Tournament Championship. They also tied for the national lead in victories while also posting the second-best winning percentage in the country.

"It's been a remarkable season," Head Coach David Barrett said. "I think we set a standard for the program moving forward. All credit to Georgetown. They're really good, they're really dynamic. It's a really, really good side. I think that's the point is to go through this and experience what it feels like to play at this level. Let this serve as inspiration for us as we move forward."

The Hoyas scored two of their goals in the first half, with their score in the final two minutes being the back breaker.

The Stags' best chances in the first half both came from the MAAC Golden Boot winner Maddy Theriault. The junior striker had a mini breakaway which earned the team the first corner kick of the match. Theriault would later have the Stags' first shot on goal as her toe poke was stopped by the Hoyas' goalkeeper.

Fairfield tested the Hoyas again in the second half with Reagan Klarmann's shot intervened with a sliding stop by the Georgetown goalkeeper.

For the match, the Stags were out-shot 22-3 with Theriault, Klarmann, and Alex Darcy all picking up shots.

The Stags complete the season with an 18-3-1 record, matching their most wins in program history and the most in nearly 20 years. Their historic season culminated with the program's first MAAC Championship since 2008 and a NCAA Tournament appearance.

Fairfield possessed one of the best offenses in the nation, netting 52 goals which was the third-most in program history and ranked in the top-10 in the nation. The Stags had eight All-MAAC selections while Theriault being named the MAAC Golden Boot winner and Coach Barrett earning the MAAC Coach of the Year award.
