Women’s Soccer Set for NCAA First Round Matchup at Georgetown

WASHINGTON, DC. – The MAAC Champion Fairfield University Women's Soccer team is set for their first NCAA Tournament matchup in 16 years when they take on sixth-seeded Georgetown on the road with kickoff scheduled for Saturday at noon. The Stags punched their ticket to the tournament after defeating Quinnipiac 1-0 to earn their first conference title since 2008.
 
Fairfield's leading scorer Maddy Theriault provided the game-winning tally in the 73rd minute as she headed in a deflected shot by Meghan Carragher. Theriault's score was her 13th of the season which leads the MAAC and is ranked in the top-20 in the country. Eight of those scores have been game-winners which places her second in the entire nation, trailing only Ohio State's Kailyn Dudukovich by one.
 
For her career, Theriault's 31 goals is fifth in program history and her 11 game-winners ties her for third.
 
The Stags enter the tournament with one of the best offenses in the nation, leading the country in shots per game (21.3) while also placing in the top-10 in: shots on goal per game (9.3), corner kicks per game (7.9), total goals (52), and total points (151).
 
Fairfield also enters the contest matching the national lead with a single-season program record tying 18 wins while also holding the second-best winning percentage in the country with their 18-2-1 record.
 
Fairfield had eight All-Conference selections and five student-athletes on the All-MAAC First Team. Fairfield had 13 different players score at least one goal with seven notching at least five.
 
Goalkeeper Katie Wright recorded her seventh shutout of the season and the 18th of her career. She is one of only three Stags all-time to reach 40 wins in a career.
 
Head Coach David Barrett picked up his 300th career win earlier this season, now sitting at 305. He is tied for 36th among active coaches with his 305 victories and 19th with a .692 winning percentage.
 
Georgetown won the Big East regular season title with an 8-1-1 conference record and a 12-3-4 overall mark. They ranked No. 20 in the country in the United Soccer Coaches national poll conducted before the Big East tournament. The Hoyas have allowed only nine goals this season, holding a 0.47 goals against average. On the offensive side, Georgetown's leading scorer is Maja Lardner who has tallied 10 goals and seven assists.
 
This is Fairfield's sixth NCAA Tournament appearance with Fairfield holding a 1-5 record in the tournament. Fairfield's lone win came in 1997 as they defeated Central Connecticut State in the NCAA Tournament play-in game.
 
The winner of the contest will play the winner of Iowa and Missouri St., in the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament.
