Stags Secure MAAC Regular Season Title with Shutout Win over Quinnipiac

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The theme of the 2024 Fairfield University Women's Soccer season has been an entire group coming together and buying in to accomplish a single goal. After Wednesday's shutout victory over Quinnipiac, the Stags are one step closer from all that dedication paying off. The Stags clinched the 2024 MAAC Regular Season Championship with a 2-0 win over the Bobcats, marking the ninth regular season title for the program. Fairfield will be the number one seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship and have guaranteed a home match throughout the playoffs.

"I feel great for the team," Head Coach David Barrett said. "We've been close in the past. Katie Wright made a big save when we needed her to. I'm really happy for all our fifth-years, this is why they are here. To try and do this so I'm really happy for all of us."

The reigning MAAC Player of the Week, Maddy Theriault had a role in both of Fairfield's (15-2-1, 10-1-1 MAAC) goals with her league-leading 12th goal of the season and also dishing out an assist.

In the 24th minute, Theriault took a through ball from Sam Erickson and beat the Quinnipiac goalkeeper to the lower right corner to break the scoreless tie. The goal was the 30th of Theriault's career as she becomes the fifth Stag all-time to reach that mark.

The Stags would add on an important score in the 70th minute as Theriault combined with Ashlyn Walsh to find Alex Darcy in the middle of the box as she finished in the top corner for her fourth goal of the season.

The Fairfield backline did an incredible job in limiting Quinnipiac's offensive attack, especially Meghan Carragher in the middle and Erickson on the wing who shut down the Bobcats' leading scorer Courtney Chochol.

The win was also the 15th of the season for the Stags, tying the third most in program history and the most under Coach Barrett.

Fairfield will be the top-seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship after winning their ninth MAAC Regular Season Championship and the second under Coach Barrett.

The Stags will host the eighth-seed in the Championships on Sunday at 1pm.
