FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Volleyball reeled off its eighth straight win and remained unbeaten in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference with a 3-0 win over visiting Saint Peter's on Saturday at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The Stags won the match before the second-largest home crowd in Fairfield Volleyball history with 1,144 fans filling the seats on Alumni and Family Weekend.
The attendance of 1,144 is second only to the crowd of 1,715 that attended the first-ever volleyball match played at Mahoney Arena on Sept. 2, 2023 against UMBC. Fairfield Volleyball also topped 1,000 fans twice at Alumni Hall: a crowd of 1,018 witnessed the 3-0 sweep of UConn on Nov. 6, 1999, and a gathering of 1,002 fans turned out for the 2007 MAAC Championship Match between the Stags and Siena.
With today's win, Fairfield improved to 8-0 in the MAAC and 10-9 overall. Saint Peter's slipped to 4-11 with a 2-6 league tally. Fairfield never trailed and no set was tied later than 6-6 as the Stags took the match by set scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-16.
"I thought we were tough at the net today, not only the nine blocks but a lot of other touches that slowed Saint Peter's down," said Head Coach
Nancy Somera. "Our offense did a good job of getting in system off of touches and getting quality swings even when the pass wasn't totally on line."
Fairfield hit .358 for the match – swinging at .333 or better in all three frames – led by 13 kills at a .611 clip from
Mamie Krubally.
Allie Elliott added 10 kills for her third straight match in double figures. Svenja Rodenbüsch put down nine kills on .412 hitting and
Mikayla Haut was at .375 on her way to eight finishers.
Supplementing the attack, middles
Maya Walker and
Emma Beretich chipped in three kills apiece.
The attack was run over .300 for the fifth time in MAAC play and seventh occurrence overall by the duo of
Abby Jandro and
Blakely Montgomery with 19 and 14 assists, respectively.
Kyla Berg also doled out eight assists to flirt with a double-double from the libero spot.
On the defensive side, Beretich and Krubally were the force behind the Stags' nine blocks, each getting a piece of five, while Walker had a hand in three stuffs.
Berg piloted the back row with a match-leading 13 digs, while Jandro contributed nine and
Noelle Carey posted eight from the back row.
In total, Fairfield's active defense held Saint Peter's to a .173 hitting percentage. The Stags have held all eight of their MAAC opponents to date below the .200 mark offensively.
Rounding out the Stags' scoring today, Elliott served up four aces with Berg, Rodenbüsch and Carey each landing one.
Saint Peter's was led by 11 kills from Penelope Rivera and seven by Karolina Rodriguez.
Fairfield Volleyball is back in action at Mahoney Arena tomorrow – Sunday, Oct. 20 – for a 1 p.m. visit from Rider. The Broncs, who will play Sacred Heart at Notre Dame High School this evening, come to the Nutmeg State in sole possession of second place in the MAAC at 6-1 as a part of a 7-12 overall mark.
