Stags Fall to Central Connecticut State

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Central Connecticut State's Giavanna Inzerillo recorded her first career hat trick while also adding an assist as the Blue Devils netted four goals in the span of 20 minutes to take a 5-2 decision over the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team on Lessing Field. Maddy Theriault and Sam Kersey touched net for the Stags as the team built a 2-1 halftime lead but could not keep the advantage with the Blue Devils' scoring output.

Theriault was the first player on the scoreboard in the high-scoring match as she launched a ball from Reagan Klarmann into the top right corner of the net for her third goal of the season. Klarmann was credited with an assist for the second-straight match while Theriault also tallied a goal in back-to-back matches.

Fairfield goalkeeper Katie Wright was superb in the first 45 minutes making two quality saves. Her first came as she stopped a cross from the Blue Devils' leading scorer Inzerillo in the 10th minute. Her second came as she fully extended on a shot by Aoife Horgan to tip the attempt over the crossbar.

Her only blemish in the first half came as Inzerillo would get her career day started with a score in the 29th minute off a corner kick.

The Stags would get that goal right back with their own corner kick as Meghan Carragher provided over the service and had her pass deflected by Ella Pisani right to the right foot of Sam Kersey who snuck the ball into the back of the net for her first goal of the season and to give the Stags a 2-1 advantage.

The Blue Devils found their offensive touch starting with a goal that was set up by Inzerillo past the line to Horgan who finished to even up the score.

CCSU would then score three goals in the span of six minutes with Inzerillo taking the ball away off a defensive miscue and then launching a 20-yard shot less than a minute later.

Both teams attempted the same number of shots with both sides credited for 14. Wright totaled four saves in the setback, the fourth time this season she has reached that number.

The Stags will now host Syracuse on Sunday at 1pm.
