Field Hockey Opens Road Trip With Stop At La Salle Friday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University field hockey team will start a three-game road swing when it travels to La Salle University for a Friday afternoon match. The game is scheduled for a 11 am start. Both teams are coming off a victory with the Stags handing Bryant a 5-0 decision while the Explorers edged Rider by a 3-0 count.
 
About The Series
  • The Stags have won the last two meetings with La Salle, posting a 2-1 overtime win at University Field in 2022 and a 5-3 home win in 2013. Last season, Alex Senior scored with under two minutes remaining in regulation to tie the score at 1-1 before Agustina Casteluchi picked up a goal in the first overtime to end the contest. In 2013, Fairfield scored three unanswered goals in the second half to overcome a one-goal deficit. Emily McCauley and Ann Burgoyne each scored two goals in the victory.
 
About Fairfield
  • Fairfield turned a 1-0 halftime lead into a 5-0 win over Bryant by scoring a pair of goals in both third and fourth quarters. Pilar Mengotti, Agustina Casteluchi, and Catherine Fitzgerald each scored their first goal of the season in the second half.
  • Alex Senior, who tallied the team's first-half goal, and Erin McGinley collected their second goals of the season in the Bryant game. The pair are two of the team's seven goal scorers this season, giving the team nine goals in three games. The offensive outburst are the most scored in the opening three games since the 2000 team tallied 11 goals in wins against Radford (4-1), Rider (4-1), and Colgate (3-2).
  • Payton Rahn made one save to secure her second shutout in three appearances, giving the junior 12 saves in three games with a 1.00 goals against average. She becomes the second goalkeeper to earn a pair of shutouts in the opening three games over the last three years. Zoe Rosen also picked up a shutout in the first game (3-0 over Albany) and in the third game (1-0 over Sacred Heart).
  • Senior and Rahn both picked up NEC Player of the Week honors for their performance against Hofstra, nationally-ranked Iowa, and Bryant. Senior posted the team's third goal in the 4-0 decision over Hofstra in the opener and the first goal in 5-0 victory against Bryant. Rahn made a season-best seven saves against Iowa which has helped her accumulate a .800 save percentage (12 saves, three goals allowed).
 
About La Salle
  • After a season-opening loss to Temple, the Explorers have reeled off three straight victories including a 3-0 result against Rider University. Including its 4-2 win over Longwood, La Salle has tallied seven goals in the its last two home games.
  • Clara Larripa paced the offense with three goals and two assists for eight points in four appearances. Sol Espona is the only other Explorer with multiple goals, netting a pair of scores. Seven different La Salle student-athletes have a goal this season which has led to 2.5 goals scored per game.
  • Goalkeepers Emily Streib and Ryan Curley have split the goalkeeping duties with Streib posting a 1.93 goals against average in her three appearances and Curley owning a 1.80 goals against average in her two games played. The duo combined for a 1.88 goals against average and a .722 save percentage.
  • La Salle ends a three-game home stand against Fairfield this afternoon, setting up a rather lengthy road trip. The Explorers will play five of its next six games on the road which includes a four-game stretch from September 17 to October 1 against Rutgers, UMass, Davidson, and Queens.
