Sharks Claim Midweek Clash, 3-0

Shult posts seven kills and four blocks for the Stags

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- Fairfield University Volleyball was on the short side of a 3-0 sweep on Tuesday at LIU, falling to the host Sharks by set scores of 25-22, 25-22 and 28-26. The Stags were led by a Blakely Montgomery double-double and seven kills apiece for Elle Shult and Maya Walker.

The loss levels the Stags' record at 3-3 on the year, while LIU improves to 1-6.

Montgomery's double-double consisted of 19 assists and a team-leading 18 digs. She also accounted for two of Fairfield's three service aces. The Stags' finishes were powered by their middles at Walker and Shult combined for 14 kills on .375 hitting.

At the pins, Mikayla Haut added five kills with Allie Eilliott and Janna Schlageter each putting down four. Montgomery also dumped over four kills from the setter spot, and Mamie Krubally rounded out the attack with two kills.

Montgomery shared setting duties with Abby Jandro, who dished out seven assists.

Defensively, Kyla Berg had 13 digs from the libero position and Schlageter recorded seven. The effort up from was led by Shult, who had a hand in four of Fairfield's six team blocks.

How It Happened

SET 1 | The first set featured five ties and 11 lead changes, with neither team leading by more than three points. The deciding run of the frame was the final one, as LIU turned a 22-21 deficit into a 25-22 win to take an early lead in the contest.

SET 2 | LIU carried its momentum into the second set, building a 17-10 advantage. Fairfield nearly closed the gap, drawing as close as 23-21, before the Sharks closed out another 25-22 final.

SET 3 | The third and ultimately final set was another close contest, The Stags played from behind throughout, out to a 22-16 margin. Fairfield slowly closed the gap, but the Sharks crept toward match point at 24-22. The Stags fought off three straight match points -- and four in total -- before gaining their own set point chance at 26-25. However, LIU made one final 3-0 run to cllose out the 28-26 frame and take the match by a 3-0 count.

Up next, the Stags welcome Big Ten foe Northwestern (2-3) to Mahoney Arena on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all fans to all home volleyball matches this season.
